I’m amazed that there are some sort of police pursuits every single day here in Los Angeles. I mean Every. Single. Day. I’ve become accustomed to this being on the early morning news at 6 am when I’m stretching, having coffee and figuring out my day. Heck, I no longer need to see the “Fast and the Furious” because I have “Eyewitness News”.
Apparently, I’m not the only one bored with the chase.
I woke up to the morning news, and Scott Reiff the Skylord (who is a local legend) is flying around describing this situation that started around 4 in the morning:
“So, this is an unusual story. We have this man who climbed a utility pole in Echo Park… Sunset is shut down in both directions. LAPD is here; he’s been up there about an hour and a half. The metro bus trying to make a 3-point turn couldn’t make it so they’re actually taking passengers off and bringing in another bus, and some Waymos have were stuck and couldn’t figure out their way around this….”
Mind you, my wife has had to say, on more than one occasion, “Get Down From There Right Now.” And, yes, this was not to our daughter.
In any case, the station cuts away, goes on to the weather report (yes, it’s early February so it’s a freezing 80 degrees today), sports, and so forth. And then they have this follow-up from the Skylord:
“Good morning, we have a bizarre situation here in more ways than one. So, we just arrived on scene… we have this man who climbed up the utility pole. LAPD tried to talk to him, they shut down all the streets, they put up tape and finally LAPD said, ‘Alright we’ve had enough of this’ and they just left. A lot of people are just walking by….”
It is now that I realize that Scott has been doing this for waaaayyyyy too long. He has become quite the Jaded Lord of the Sky. Let’s take stock of Scott:
- Things that are just a little out of the ordinary: Guy on a utility pole waving at Scott, jack-knifed bus on the street blocking Waymos that are confused (ok, let’s admit that the last one makes perfect sense).
- Completely Bizarre: LAPD left the scene.
I’m not disagreeing here, just noticing that typically it would take an act of Congress, the National Guard, or at least the Fire Department, to get LAPD to leave the area. And this happens only after a 15-hour standoff that makes traffic in LA miserable (which is directly correlated to the fact that there are LAPD chases on Every. Single. Day.)
I guess that even the LAPD has gotten bored with so many chases – they are pursuing other pursuits, such as it were. It’s as if the LAPD is treating this situation as analogous to a cat stuck up a tree – at some point the guy will get hungry and climb down. Maybe leave a box of Krispy Kremes at the base of the utility pole as encouragement.
LA – Chasing the Dream….
