Recently a new Dutch Bros Coffee kiosk opened in a parking lot near LarryLand. As we learned in my article Half Baked (See Half-Baked ), I am the king of non-committal coffee drinks. So, there was much excitement in the kingdom; we were committed to trying it. Is it the ‘Bucks or the ‘Bros?
But there is a problem. This is not a large facility. That means that unlike the ‘Bucks there is not a brood of teenagers sipping large sugary drinks crowding the lobby as if it were the New York City subway at rush hour.
Instead, they’re all loitering in the parking lot. Really. The line extends from the building to approximately Chicago. It’s so busy that they have traffic patterns and food trucks. My friend Scott pointed out that you could get a cup of coffee from the truck while you were waiting for coffee from the Coffee Bros.
Oh, and by the way, that is at 10 o’clock in the evening. I absolutely kid you not.
I decided that the only appropriate thing to do was this:
- Get in my car.
- Drive 2 ½ hours through heavy traffic to the desert.
- Get a cup of coffee. Note, I did not have to stand in line.
- Drive back.
All told, it took less time than going to the store a mile away from my home. And… they still did not have the Half-Baked.
At the end of the day, and $50 in gas plus $5 for the drink, it’s still just coffee.
Next time I think we should all just go dutch.
