When I was young, I was taught that a mitzvah was both a good deed and a responsibility, and that I should do one every day. It is something that I aspire to.
Today I decided to go to the beach to view the “Life Rolls On” surf event (see https://liferollson.org/huntingtonbeach ). This is an annual event where disabled people of all ages can come to the beach and get a chance to surf.
The way it works is this: There are 10 teams, designated by different colors, of about 20 people each. The participant is put on a surfboard modified with grab rails and then carried onto the beach and into the surf. Part of the team pushes him or her into the waves, and they ride back to shore to be surrounded by the rest of the team.

What is awe-inspiring are the smiles. The participant you see here had that smile from the start to the finish and kept smiling even as she waited on the beach. I saw some guys my age, I saw some kids not even 5 riding in their parent’s lap. Everyone was smiling.
That, my friends, is the mitzvah.
